What your child actually learns in Alberta science this year (Grades 1–6)

If you've ever looked at Alberta's official Program of Studies and closed the tab two minutes later, you're not alone. It's written for educators, in outcome-code language, and it's genuinely hard to answer the one question parents actually have: "What is my kid supposed to learn this year?"
Here's the plain-language version.
The big change: Alberta rebuilt science in 2023
Alberta rolled out a new K–6 science curriculum starting in September 2023. If you went to school here yourself — or if your older child went through the previous program — the structure has changed underneath you. The new curriculum organizes everything around seven recurring ideas that spiral upward from Grade 1 to Grade 6:
- Matter — what things are made of and how materials behave
- Energy — heat, light, sound, motion, and where energy comes from
- Earth Systems — land, water, weather, and how our planet changes
- Living Systems — plants, animals, habitats, and the human body
- Space — the sky, the seasons, and our place in the solar system
- Computer Science — yes, really: coding concepts and computational thinking are part of science in Alberta, from Grade 1
- Scientific Methods — how to observe, question, test, and explain like a scientist
The word to notice is spiral. Your child doesn't "do plants" once and move on. They meet living systems in Grade 1 at one depth, again in Grade 3 at another, and again in Grade 5 with more sophistication. Each pass assumes the last one landed.
What that means in practice, grade by grade
- Grades 1–2 are about noticing: describing materials, watching seasons and weather, observing what living things need, and following simple step-by-step instructions (that's the start of computer science — sequencing, not screens).
- Grades 3–4 shift to explaining: why materials change, how forces and simple machines work, how landforms and waterways shape Alberta, and how living things depend on each other.
- Grades 5–6 move toward reasoning with evidence: chemistry-flavoured matter studies, electricity and circuits, weather systems, body systems, and genuinely meaty computer-science ideas like algorithms and debugging.
The "I Can" statements — the part worth knowing
Every outcome in the Alberta curriculum can be expressed as an "I Can" statement — a specific, checkable skill like "I can describe ways materials can be changed and identify whether the change is reversible." There are hundreds of them across Grades 1–6.
This is the honest answer to "is my child on track?": not a percentage score on a random quiz, but which I Can statements they can actually demonstrate. When you ask a teacher, a tutor, or an app what your child has covered, the credible answer names outcomes — not minutes of screen time.
Three things you can do this year
- Ask "what big idea are you on?" instead of "what did you do in science?" Kids can usually tell you they're "doing matter" or "doing space," and that gives you the hook to connect kitchen experiments, library books, or a night-sky walk to what's happening in class.
- Watch for the spiral. If Grade 4 electricity is a struggle, the gap is often in the Grade 2–3 energy ideas underneath it. Going back is usually faster than pushing forward.
- Keep the wonder attached. The curriculum's own scientific-methods strand is built on questioning and observing. A child who asks "why does the puddle disappear?" is doing the curriculum — the vocabulary can catch up later.
