What your child actually learns in Alberta science this year (Grades 1–6)

If you've ever looked at Alberta's official Program of Studies and closed the tab two minutes later, you're not alone. It's written for educators, in outcome language, and it's genuinely hard to answer the one question parents actually have: "What is my kid supposed to learn this year?"
Here's the plain-language version.
The big change: Alberta rebuilt science
Alberta phased in a new science curriculum in two stages: Kindergarten to Grade 3 in September 2023, and Grades 4 to 6 in September 2024. If you went to school here yourself — or if your older child went through the previous program — the structure has changed underneath you.
The new curriculum organizes everything around seven Organizing Ideas:
- Matter — what things are made of and how materials behave
- Energy — heat, light, sound, motion, and where energy comes from
- Earth Systems — land, water, weather, and how our planet changes
- Living Systems — plants, animals, habitats, and the human body
- Space — the sky and our place in the solar system (this one starts in Grade 4)
- Computer Science — yes, really: instructions and computational thinking are part of science in Alberta, starting in Kindergarten
- Scientific Methods — how to investigate, weigh evidence, and explain like a scientist
Six of the seven run from the earliest grades; Space is introduced in Grade 4.
The word to notice is spiral. Your child doesn't "do plants" once and move on. They meet living systems early at one depth, and again later with more sophistication. Each pass assumes the last one landed.
What that means in practice, grade by grade
- Grades 1–2 are about noticing and describing: properties of materials, Earth's landforms and bodies of water (Grade 2 covers Alberta's own plateaus, mountains, valleys, hills and prairies), what living things need — and, in computer science, following and then designing sets of instructions. Grade 1 students follow sequences of up to three instructions; Grade 2 students design sets of up to four and debug them when they don't work. No screens required.
- Grades 3–4 shift to explaining: how materials change and whether that change is permanent or reversible (Grade 3), how Earth's surface changes and what its layers reveal about the past — erosion, fossils (Grade 3), how Earth's systems interconnect and how we conserve them (Grade 4). Grade 4 is also where algorithms get named, and where Space arrives.
- Grades 5–6 move toward reasoning with evidence: forces in water and air — buoyancy, lift, drag — and renewable versus non-renewable energy (Grade 5); climate, weather and Alberta agriculture (Grade 5) building toward climate change (Grade 6); the internal systems of living things (Grade 5); ecosystems and biodiversity (Grade 6). In computer science, Grade 5 students translate an algorithm into block-based code including loops, and Grade 6 looks at abstraction and the impact of computing on people.
One thing that surprises returning parents: electricity and circuits are no longer part of the K–6 program. If you remember a Grade 5 electricity unit, that was the old (1996) curriculum. Circuits now appear in junior high.
Outcomes — the part worth knowing
Alberta states 41 Learning Outcomes across Grades 1–6 — roughly six to eight per grade. Each one is unpacked into finer statements the province calls Knowledge, Understanding, and Skills & Procedures, which is where the several hundred specific, checkable expectations live.
You'll often see those rewritten as "I Can" statements — "I can describe ways materials can be changed and classify the change as permanent or reversible" (that one is Grade 3, Matter). Worth knowing: "I Can" isn't Alberta's official term. It's a widely used teacher convention for translating outcomes into student-friendly language, and it's how we present them too, because kids and parents can actually act on it.
Either way, this is the honest answer to "is my child on track?": not a percentage score on a random quiz, but which outcomes they can actually demonstrate. When you ask a teacher, a tutor, or an app what your child has covered, the credible answer names outcomes — not minutes of screen time.
Three things you can do this year
- Ask "what big idea are you on?" instead of "what did you do in science?" Kids can usually tell you they're "doing matter" or "doing living things," and that gives you the hook to connect kitchen experiments, library books, or a walk outside to what's happening in class.
- Watch for the spiral. If Grade 6 climate change feels abstract to your child, the gap is often in the Grade 5 climate-and-weather work underneath it. Going back is usually faster than pushing forward.
- Keep the wonder attached. Scientific Methods is a real strand with its own outcomes at every grade — asking questions, gathering data, weighing evidence. A child who asks "why does the puddle disappear?" is doing the curriculum. The vocabulary can catch up later.
