The two words that turn Alberta's curriculum into your child's own voice

"How was science today?"
"Fine."
Every home educator knows that dead end. It isn't evasion — it's that the question is unanswerable. How was science asks a nine-year-old to summarize an afternoon against a standard nobody showed them. The conversation has nowhere to go because neither of you named where it was supposed to go in the first place.
Alberta did name it, as it happens. For every grade, the province publishes exactly what a child is expected to know and do. The trouble is who it's written for.
What the curriculum actually sounds like
Here is a slice of what Alberta's current Grade 4 science curriculum says children should know about design — quoted from the official document (an excerpt; the full block runs seven bullet points):
- Design processes include understanding the problem, forming ideas (ideating), planning, creating, analyzing, testing, troubleshooting.
- An algorithm is a sequence of instructions.
- Artifacts are objects or products made by humans, machines, or computers through the process of design.
Accurate, complete — and written for curriculum officials and teachers, not for the person doing the learning. No nine-year-old will read that block, and no parent should have to parse it at the kitchen table on a Tuesday.
Now the same content, rewritten:
I can explain what an algorithm is and how it can help solve a problem. I can give and receive feedback during the design process. I can identify the main steps in a design process.
Nothing was watered down — each sentence traces back to the same official outcome. (One stretches a touch past the official wording, which asks students to provide feedback during the design process; we added receiving it, because feedback is a two-way skill.) But two things changed. The wall of text became separate, small, winnable pieces. And the grammar flipped: the subject of the sentence is now the child. That second change is the one this post is about, because it's the difference between curriculum your child is subjected to and curriculum your child can speak.
It matters even inside a single outcome. Alberta's Grade 7 heat unit contains this one official sentence: "describe the effect of heat on the motion of particles; and explain changes of state, using the particle model of matter." That's two different skills wearing one semicolon. A learner can honestly own the first while still working on the second — but only if someone splits them apart so each can be claimed on its own:
I can describe how heating affects the motion of particles. I can explain changes of state using the particle model of matter.
One note on vintage, because Alberta is mid-renewal: the Grade 4 wording above is from the province's current K–6 science curriculum, while the Grade 7 sentence is from the Science 7–9 Program of Studies that remains in force today — not from any draft replacement.
Why the child's own voice matters — what the research actually says
Educators call this territory assessment as learning — the term is closely associated with Canadian researcher Lorna Earl's book of that name, and it reached Alberta through a 2006 assessment guide produced by the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol, with Alberta Education named among the partner ministries. The idea: beyond a teacher checking learning, the learner can be taught to check their own — and that checking is itself a form of learning.
It holds up empirically, with conditions worth knowing about:
- A 2017 meta-analysis of studies spanning grades 3–12 found that students who evaluated their own work against criteria went on to outperform comparable students who didn't (Sanchez and colleagues, Journal of Educational Psychology).
- Some of the largest gains reported in this research aren't test scores at all — they're in self-efficacy and self-regulation, a learner's belief that they can learn and their ability to steer their own effort (Panadero, Jönsson & Botella, 2017). For home education, where the long game is a child who can eventually direct their own learning, that's the outcome that pays for decades.
- Self-assessment is a skill that must be taught, not a form to be filled in. Heidi Andrade's 2019 review of 76 studies is blunt about this: children's self-judgments become useful when they're practised, supported, and kept away from anything resembling a grade.
- Children overestimate themselves — reliably. A 2023 review covering about 29,000 students found learners rate themselves higher than experts do on average, and that the gap shrinks with feedback, practice, and growing knowledge of the subject (León, Panadero and colleagues) — a review that spans learners from elementary school to university, so read it as a picture of learners in general rather than a rule about young children. Separate developmental studies add that young children are especially over-optimistic — in several studies, seven- and eight-year-olds stayed over-optimistic even after feedback (Kolloff and colleagues, 2023; Lipko and colleagues, 2009). That's not dishonesty; it's what developing minds do.
Read together, the research gives home educators a recipe, and it's mercifully short: share the target before the work, keep the stakes at zero, let the child judge, then let the judgment change what happens next. One honest note before the ritual below: these studies tested structured self-assessment in classrooms, not this exact kitchen-table routine — the ritual is our application of those principles, not a lab-tested protocol.
A ten-minute weekly ritual
Once a week — Friday works well — pick two or three "I can" sentences from what you covered, and hand your child the job of judging them. Three levels, in whatever words your family likes:
- Not yet.
- Getting there.
- I could teach it to someone.
Two rules make it work. First, level three must be earned out loud: "I could teach it" means they teach it — to you, to a younger sibling, to the dog. Explaining is the test; the research on self-assessment keeps circling back to the fact that judging your understanding against real criteria is where the learning happens. Second, "not yet" is celebrated, never punished. A child who can look at "I can explain changes of state using the particle model" and say "not yet — I get melting but I don't really get why gases spread out" has just handed you next week's plan, for free, in their own words. That sentence is worth more than a page of completed worksheets. The moment "not yet" carries a consequence, the research is equally clear about what happens: the honest signal disappears and every box gets a cheerful, useless check mark.
Calibrate by age. In Grades 1–3, treat the whole thing as a game and expect sunny over-confidence — the point at that age is building the habit of looking at a target and talking about it, not accuracy. By Grades 4–6, gently comparing their self-rating against what they can actually show ("you said 'teach it' — go ahead, teach me") starts training the accuracy itself. By junior high, a learner who has done this for years walks into any classroom — or PAT season — already knowing how to find the target and measure their own distance from it.
One more quiet benefit. A notebook of dated "I can" sentences in your child's own judgment is a record of learning that speaks the curriculum's native language — because each sentence traces back to an official Alberta outcome. (It also sits naturally alongside the records Alberta already asks home educating parents to keep: dated evaluations of progress and samples of student work.) And if you're on a supervised program, when you sit down with the facilitator from your associate board or associate independent school, "here's what she can do, in her words, mapped to the program" is a conversation-starter most evaluations can only dream of.

The examples above aren't invented for this post — they're from our library.
